Overall Goal of the Program...

Improve detection, reporting and follow through of suspected cases of child abuse. Review how to handle suspected abuses, medical exams, patient history, and how, when and where to report. Pediatricians need to be aided by the professionals of Children Protection Services who are specifically trained in all areas of child abuse including neglect, sexual and physical abuses. Through this presentation on Child abuse pediatricians will improve patient care by referring those in need to Children's protection services and letting the experts handle these unfortunate cases and getting the abused child the best care possible.

Objectives

Presented by Phil Colaizzo, M.D. At the conclusion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to: Recognize cases of suspected child physical abuse, neglect and child sexual abuse. Document injuries appropriately, understand your responsibilities as a mandated reporter. Collaborate effectively with the investigative processes, child protective services (CPS) and law enforcement agencies.

Objectives presented by Child Protection Team: Senior Case Coordinator/Trainers: Tracey Piendle & Susan Sims: Report the incidence of child abuse in Palm Beach County. Review the appropriate procedure to report suspected child abuse. Discuss the response to a report, what happens to reports, what to do if the response is not satisfactory. Communicate how are these children followed and treated in the system once identified.

Target Audience

Members and Guests of the Palm Beach County Pediatric Society, Pediatric Dentists, and any healthcare provider who treats pediatric patients.
